Wayne Howie has something to say and he is not shy to say what he means. Through an interdisciplinary approach encompassing painting, collage, and sculptural forms his paintings explode with a figurative nature. Using comic relief Howie engages and queries issues of current relevance. References to popular comics, television, newspapers, urban graffiti and contemporary art splinter out from his frequently large-scale paintings. His art has been described as shocking, beautiful, arrogant, lovely and even ugly. Howie grew up on the urban fringe 18 kilometres to the south west of Brisbane. The architectural modernism of his childhood featured economical use of space with lack of ornamentation, utilisation of new materials and techniques, and above all design simplicity, elements that rebound in Howie's artwork today. There is an upcoming exhibition at The Old Art Gallery in Leamington Spa as part of World Mental Health Day. The exhibition is to raise individual and social awareness and improve mental health services. Further details can be found here

Calling all artists in Kent
Mascalls Gallery in Paddock Wood is looking for the best artists in Kent, UK for ko-ax 09. The exhibition will run between 6 March and 4 April 2009 and will feature 6 artists, each represented by a significant body of work. Works of all media are welcomed from painting, photography and sculpture to installation and new media. There is no theme to the exhibition and there is no limit on size.
